Additional information

This paper describes a novel electrode array (patented) for patterning and characterising cells. Previously, multiple electrodes were etched on one metallised surface, with limitations in terms of the depth of field penetration and the number of electrodes. Here, a laminate array is presented wherein cells are sandwiched between a patterned electrode and a transparent ITO counterelectrode; cells could be patterned across large areas, forming much deeper hemispherical cell structures that more closely mimic cell growth in vivo when encapsulated in hydrogel. A system based on the dot electrodes will be released by DEPtech (www.deptech.com) in 2015.
