Asymptotic homogenisation in linear elasticity : Part I: Mathematical formulation and finite element modelling
The paper presents a new approach to the asymptotic homogenisation and localisation theories with which complex composite materials can be efficiently modelled as continuous materials. The paper is the first of a two-part paper where applications of that theory are studied (part 2 in DoI:10.1016/j.commatsci.2009.01.027). The work has enabled other researchers to further develop and apply these approaches (UK, DoI:10.1016/j.compositesb.2010.10.004; Italy, DoI:10.1016/j.compositesb.2010.12.009; USA, DoI:10.1088/0253-6102/58/2/039; Spain, DoI:10.1016/j.jmbbm.2011.05.039; China, DoI:10.1016/j.commatsci.2013.02.025). The work behind this paper was funded by the FCT - Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (PTDC/EME/73503/2006, €100k).
