Additional information

This is the first refereed journal publication on the application of Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) arrays as fast, ultra-sensitive sensors in the burgeoning field of visible light communications (VLC). This was a curiosity-driven PhD project in the EPRSC-funded HYPIX platform grant (EP/F060076/1).This was an extension of a previous paper that was one of a small number selected from the prestigious IEEE-sponsored ESSCIRC (2012) for submission to this journal. This architecture has already influenced the design of the Positron Emission Tomography image sensor in FP7 SPADNET (http://www.spadnet.eu/, coordinator Edoardo.Charbon@epfl.ch) and VLC receiver in EPSRC Programme Grant (EP/K00042X).
