Adsorption at the solid–liquid interface as the source of contact angle dependence on the curvature of the three-phase line
Contrary to accepted wisdom, this paper demonstrates for the first time experimentally and theoretically that the equilibrium contact angle of liquids depends on pressure. Following this work our collaborator in Toronto secured grants from Schlumberger and NSERC (ref. RGPIN, 2011, charles.ward@utoronto.ca ) to explore the implications of this fundamental result on technologies used for oil extraction. This work also led to an RAEng Global Research Award (REF. 532MPC, PI Sefiane) at the University of Toronto with subsequent appointment as Adjunct Professor for the period 2008-14 and as consultant with HATCH Canada (Daniel Brosig, email available).
