During seven research trips between 2001-10 Pierse journeyed throughout Australia to carry out primary manuscript research at the National Library of Australia, National Archives of Australia, State Archives of New South Wales, the Mitchell Library and Art Gallery of NSW. He gained privileged access to privately held correspondence in remote locations in Australia, visiting 22 artists, curators and critics to record thirty hours of interviews, creating an oral history archive of lasting importance, and uncovering photographs of previously unrecorded paintings and exhibition installations. Additionally Pierse spent seven years researching correspondence and exhibition files in the Whitechapel and Tate Gallery archives.
