This 106,000 word volume is the first history of the impact of consumerism, globalization and, above all, immigration upon the development of eating patterns in Britain since the middle of the nineteenth century. The narrative depended upon the gathering of a large amount of material, which included: visits to 6 different archives; 12 interviews carried out by Panayi; the utilization of 41 different contemporary newspapers and periodicals either wholly concerned with or carrying articles on food and catering; the use of hundreds of cookbooks and contemporary guides to eating; and contextualization in the extant literature on immigration and food history.
