Double-weighted statement

This scholarly contribution demonstrates the broad relevance of anthropological knowledge and argues for a more inclusive conception of the discipline which engages the public imagination. This major contribution examines the evolving social contexts of theory and practice from the mid-19th century and highlights the importance of popular anthropologists in forming and sustaining the discipline broadly. It explores the cross-fertilisation of anthropologists, scientists and prominent literary figures and assesses their continuing efforts to advance the role of anthropology in public debates. The book, based on extensive archival research, transgresses academic frontiers in an original and provocative manner.
