Additional information

This paper demonstrated the importance of the local crystalline environment on the geometry and extent of photoinduced linkage isomerism possible. This has proved seminal to the subsequent development of materials in which light absorption indirectly drives further changes in the crystal structure; such behaviour is of substantial international interest in the development of new materials for optical data storage. The work reported here was later presented at an international conference (International Union of Crystallography XXII World Congress, Madrid, 2011).
