Additional information

This article resulted from a longstanding collaboration between QMUL and Imperial and Merck Chemicals Ltd (with financial support from EPSRC (DT/F006144/2 and EP/F056648/2). It addresses the fundamental problem of environmental instability which organic semiconductors suffer from. Conceptually the idea of mixing the semiconductor with an insulator is counter-intuitive and has led to considerable debate. Merck Chemicals Ltd, Chilworth Technical Centre provided substantial in-kind support by supplying the polythiophene.
