Chloride penetration in concrete subject to wet/dry cycling: influence of moisture content
First of three papers aimed at elucidating the role of absorption to chloride penetration in partially saturated concrete, first identified by TRL as the probable major cause of premature deterioration of bridges. The study conducted over a six year period shows that as much as 30% of protection provided by the concrete cover recommended in BS8500: Part 1 can be lost after exposure to just one wet/dry cycle. The results further show that the value of surface chloride content used to estimate the depth of concrete cover for this exposure class (XD3) in BS8500: Part 1 has been significantly underestimated.
