Additional information

Millimetre-wave (e.g. 60 GHz) wireless networks are likely to provide next generation of ultra-high-speed WiFi-like technology. One promising approach for low-cost and low-complexity distribution of data to and from wireless access points is to use optical fibre as distribution medium for millimetre-wave signals. Paper presents novel method using advanced semiconductor mode-locked lasers as millimetre-wave self-oscillating mixers, removing need for a separate electronic local oscillator. Technique described in paper is being considered as candidate technology by major multi-national companies e.g. Corning MobileAccess [contact: R&D Director].
