Additional information

Theoretically, chronic peripheral stimulation can have much more localised rehabilitative effect than drugs. However, it is virtually impossible to render electrical stimulation selectively, either with regards to specific fibres being affected or with regards to the direction of activation. E.g. Vagus Nerve Stimulation affects both sensory and motor neural pathways causing quite pronounced side-effects during seizure suppression. This paper is one of the pioneering publications in combining electrical with optical neural intervention. The results offer early evidence that the technique may rid stimulation of its dominant bottleneck, potentially making it much more applicable for addressing neurogenic diseases effectively.
