Additional information

Computations of flow through labyrinth seals within gas turbine engines present a major challenge when the adjacent cavities need to be considered in the computations. This is because of the orders of magnitude difference in time and velocity scales. An added significant complexity results from taking into account the structural vibrations. The type of calculation presented in this paper which takes all these into account has been done for the first time using a true engine geometry leading to direct industrial application of the results.
