Activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (hif-1α) delays inflammation resolution by reducing neutrophil apoptosis and reverse migration in a zebrafish inflammation model
This paper initiated an international collaboration (Australia, Germany, Portugal, Spain, UK) focused on studying inflammation through the analysis of neutrophils in zebrafish. Motivated by limitations of commercial software, Reyes-Aldasoro embarked on the development of an open-source package (PhagoSight) for the segmentation, tracking and statistical analysis of phagocytes. PhagoSight (www.phagosight.org) was subsequently used in seven publications: Bhalerao (ISBI 2012), Holmes (Roy Soc Interface 2012), Pase (Current Biology, 2012), Holmes (Advances Hematology 2012), Kadirkamanathan (PLoS One 2012), de Oliveira (Immunology 2013), Henry (PLoS One, 2013). Key findings obtained with Phagosight have important implications on innate immune responses and human health.
