Additional information

Neurocritical care is a specialist medical journal reporting on innovations in neurological intensive care medicine and technology. This paper reports a novel technique for measuring brain blood oxygenation in intensive care patients recovering from neurological injury. It is the first report in a medical journal of measurements of blood oxygen saturation within the human brain. Availability of oxygen to the brain tissue is the most critical variable for guiding treatment to prevent permanent disability and death. The findings showed that brain oxygen levels could be recorded for extended periods, with no adverse effects, providing invaluable information to clinicians.
