Performance of honed surface profiles to artificial hip joints: An experimental investigation
Wear in artificial joints can lead to significant health problems. Although textured surface technology has been used successfully in car engines, its application in artificial hip joints had not been explored. This study showed, for the first time, that dimpled metal-on-metal surfaces in artificial hip joints produce superior tribological performances than plain metal surfaces and that dimple depth, width and density influenced wear resistance. This study was funded (£20k) by DePuy UK, a leading manufacturer of orthopaedic implants and led to further funded studies (University of Malaya RG147-12AET and and BRN CZ.1.07/2.3.00/30.0039) and publications (Material, IMechE) and on wear.
