This 115,000-word monograph, covering a timeframe from 1800 to 2000, originated from a Wellcome Trust grant on the history of sports medicine (2004-2007). It is the first book to incorporate histories of sport and medicine as it places the athletic body in the context of scientific and medical developments, the state’s role in the promotion of sport and physical culture and the changing nature of sport’s commercialisation. To achieve this narrative, a wide-range of primary source materials was gathered: records from 11 archives; 40 newspapers and periodicals were surveyed; a questionnaire elicited 32 responses and led to 20 oral interviews.
