Turbulence Structures in Flow over Two-Dimensional Dunes
The morphodynamics of sandbed rivers eventuates from the complex instantaneous turbulent flow above the bed, which has not previously been quantified in sufficient detail to understand all relevant physical mechanisms. The flow over sand dunes is simulated using the large-eddy simulation (LES) method, accomplishing the eduction of turbulence structures over dunes and the quantification of their effects on flow statistics. The paper demonstrates the ability of LES to predict geophysical flows in great detail. The paper was nominated for the ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering paper of the year award and has been widely recognised (e.g. U. Piomelli).
