Additional information

<26> Simulating indirect illumination in real-time is very challenging due to computation costs. This is the first paper to demonstrate high-quality, real-time indirect illumination (including caustics and complex lighting environments). The core novelty of the technique is the use of imperfect but inexpensive-to-compute visibility information, which was not previously known to be a valid approximation. Accuracy was demonstrated with reference comparisons; scalability with respect to number of lights, resolution, and points was demonstrated. This work opened up new ways of thinking about the use of approximate visibility and led to much follow-up work.
