Calculating Compassion: Humanity and Relief in War, Britain 1870 - 1914
This monograph length work required the collection and analysis of a large and complex body of sources from a wide range of UK repositories. It draws on both personal and institutional archives, some in private collections as well as a very wide range of published material including newspapers, periodicals and institutional records to chart the history of British humanitarian organisations in a range of European and colonial wars. Its sustained argument, which deploys the ideas and methods of cultural history to interrogate traditional social and institutional histories, makes a significant novel contribution to a recently opened subject area.
