Additional information

A solution is given to a long standing problem in cloud physics, namely the origin of the broad size distribution of cloud droplets. This is shown to be due to the combined effect of dispersion of large and small scale turbulent structures. A novel method for tracking individual droplets is employed and kinematic simulation is used to overcome the problem of dealing with the large range of scales of motion in clouds. The work in this paper led to Reeks being invited to give the 2009 Knox Millsaps Lecture at the University of Florida (contact: Prof James Klausner, klaus@ufl.edu).
