Additional information

This paper presents the first systematic description of a range of new designs of oscillatory baffled mesoreactor. The designs were periodic smooth constrictions, with periodic hexagonal nuts on a central thread and a continuous helical baffle. All designs were shown to exhibit excellent control of processing time (narrow residence time distribution), and all are simple and easy-to-fabricate. The helically baffled reactor exhibited a high degree of plug flow over an operating window one order of magnitude broader than any design investigated before. The research was carried out as part of EPSRC project “Evolvable Process Design” (EP/F016999/1; £329k).
