This paper solved a fundamental problem in micromechanics of granular materials by deriving a three-dimensional microstructural expression of the strain tensor. Combining with the mircostructural expression of the stress tensor, the newly developed microstructural expression of the strain tensor opens the way for the development of macro-level stress-strain relations based on micro mechanics.
