Additional information

<28> Originality: Offers a new theoretical approach to understanding how the information present in neural responses is read-out or used by the rest of the brain, as well as new approach on sensory adaptation. Clarifies how to mathematically relate data from neural recordings with behavioral performance in estimation and discrimination tasks.

Significance: Method can be used to address a variety of issues related to plasticity in the brain, optimality of computations in the brain, as well as studies of visual illusions.

Rigour: Technical paper, making thorough use of estimation theory. Co-author E. Simoncelli is a world-famous leader in this field.
