<28> Originality: This paper develops a novel, sound and automated method to construct coarse-grained dynamics of rule-based models.

Significance: Rule-based models provide a compact alternative to approaches that require explicit enumeration of all possible molecular species of a system of biomolecules. The method presented here does not require the execution of the rule-based model, is independent of model rate constants, and typically forms a system of greatly reduced dimension.

Rigour: The method is formal, which makes its properties more transparent and amenable to proof. Demonstrated on a substantial section of the EGFR pathway.
