Additional information

Enhancing the precision of electrical capacitance to measure lubricating film thickness requires understanding of the dielectric properties of lubricant. Commercial lubricants are often polar or contain polar additives. Hence, evaluating the influence of polarity upon capacitance is important. Experimental results for very thin films (below 15-20 nanometres) reveal a new form of behaviour between capacitance and dielectric’s thickness. This finding provides insights into the dielectric properties of very thin lubricating films relevant to measurement of lubricant film thickness in machine elements, condition monitoring and electrolytic capacitors.
