Additional information

<12> This paper investigates the optimisation of the locations of monitoring points in water distribution networks by using the elitist genetic algorithm. Optimised monitoring is very important for efficient operation of networks for distributing water, which is essential for life on earth. The paper develops a mathematical model for optimal placement of pressure monitoring points. The model tackles a combinatorial optimisation problem, belonging to the class of nondeterministic polynomial time hard (NP-hard) problems. The work resulted from previous research collaboration between Staffordshire University and Harbin Institute of Technology, funded by a ‘China-UK Science Networking’ grant from the Royal Society.
