JMHE-1: This paper, funded by EPSRC Programme Grant (EP/H040536, PI:Elmirgani, £5,997,917), proposes optimum use of renewable energy in optical networks through optimum energy-efficient routing and optimum rate adaptation. It led to two new projects within the GreenTouch consortium – Optimum End-to-End Resource Allocation (OPERA), and Switching and Transmission (STAR). STAR was subsequently funded by EPSRC (EP/K016873, PI:Elmirgani, £356,078) with Alcatel-Lucent (thierry.klein@alcatel-lucent.com) and BT (louise.krug@bt.com). This paper was amongst the top-ten accessed in the IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology (January–July 2011), and led to invited talks to the GreenTouch consortium (May 2011), Bell Laboratories (New Jersey, May 2011), ONDM'12, and INFOCOM'13.
