Could passive knee laxity be related to active gait mechanics? An exploratory computational biomechanical study using probabilistic methods
Significance of output:
This paper investigates whether the movements of the replaced knee observed by the surgeon on the operating table can be related to those that occur when the patient is walking post-operatively. Previous investigations have failed to reach definitive conclusions as they were usually based on a single patient; however, this probabilistic investigation demonstrated for the first time that relationships are apparent for a population of patients for a range of activities. The findings have been used to inform surgical practice at Southampton General Hospital (Mr David Barrett, consultant orthopaedic surgeon), to ensure more natural movement of the implanted limb.
