Significance of output:
One of the dominant noise sources in a modern aero engine is the broadband noise arising from the interaction between the turbulent wakes from the rotor convecting onto the stator vanes. The periodicy of the stator vanes causes sound to be radiated upstream and downstream as a series of acoustic modes. This paper presents, for the first time, a detailed investigation into
the distribution of the modal energy amongst the modes. This information is invaluable to the noise control engineer as it provides information about which modes are dominant and hence which modes must be controlled.
