Significance of output:

The alkaline hydrothermal treatment of several ordered TiO2 microstructures has shown that if the characteristic size of those structures is larger than 1 micrometer, then the resulting titanate nanotubes are agglomerated into hierarchical structures having a similar-to-original TiO2 shape. This principle opens up a novel route to the synthesis of multi-scale TiO2 based materials combining the benefits of nanomaterials (with a high surface area) and structured micromaterials (having effective transport through the channels), which could be essential in application areas such as lithium batteries, solar cells and bio-coatings.
