Significance of output:

This work, partially supported by BP Exploration, explores the impact properties of polymeric coatings used in the oil industry. Damage to these coatings can result in corrosion of the substrate steel leading to considerable replacement costs. The behaviour of these coatings is often inferred from hardness tests, e.g. Meyer’s hardness. This paper explores whether this parameter is appropriate to characterise behaviour under impact conditions by comparing the Dynamic Meyer’s hardness and the Meyer hardness determined from static indentation data. The differing strain rates in the two tests are found to have a considerable effect on the performance of the coating.
