Compressibility effects on boundary layer transition induced by an isolated roughness element
Significance of output:
This paper is a fundamental study of the effects of wall roughness on boundary layer transition in high Mach number flows. The research was supported by the EU FP7 ATLLAS project, which aimed to enhance technologies that will enable flight at very high speed. Transition is difficult to predict at high Mach numbers due to the influence of wall temperature as well as compressibility effects and an important outcome of this work was the formulation of a simple criterion, based on roughness height, Mach number and wall temperature, which predicts the onset of laminar to turbulent transition.
