Design and commission of an experimental test rig to apply a full-scale pressure load on composite sandwich panels representative of aircraft secondary structure
Significance of output:
The paper describes the design a new approach to testing apparatus to assess the performance of composite sandwich panels using full-field optical measurement techniques and hence validate FE models of the panels. The work was funded by GE Aviation and allowed GE to show that the current very costly autoclave based manufacturing process could be replaced with a much less expensive oven cure. The work in the paper showed that there was no reduction in performance as a result of the manufacturing process. The paper was selected as one of the hot articles in the journal in 2010.
