Significance of output:

The paper describes work from a collaborative project between UK Universities; the role of Southampton was to design the composite structure and assist in interpreting the results. The work is part of an EU programme relevant to the aircraft industry for safer and more economical operations. Structural health monitoring systems such as the one developed in the paper enable in-service damage detection and will be key in enabling greater usage of composites in aircraft to make lighter and more economical structures. The paper won the industrially sponsored British Society for Strain Measurement Fylde Electronics Prize for best paper in Strain.
