Significance of output:

Atomic oxygen (AO) attacks spacecraft materials and hence if life is to be predicted it is essential to be able to measure the AO environment in-situ. This paper describes the development and calibration of a thick film zinc oxide AO sensor. The work is original in that the sensor is renewable by heating, making it possible to reuse the sensor, whereas previous designs of sensor are usually consumed in the measurement process. The sensors have been flown on the International Space Station as part of the ESA Medet experiment. (http://www.bulletins-electroniques.com/actualites/38429.htm)
