Significance of output:

Composite sandwich structures are widely used due to their excellent stiffness/strength to weight ratios. They are susceptible to delamination of the bonded face-core interfaces, and damage tolerance is a problem prohibiting wider use for eg primary aircraft structures. FE based fracture mechanics analyses and experimental validation of a novel crack-stopper are presented. The functional requirements for the crack stopper are derived and validated against experimental results. The work has led to funded projects value GBP 1.0 mill supported by LM Wind Power, Siemens Wind Power, DIAB (Sweden), US Navy and the Danish Council for Independent Research.
