Design space dimensionality reduction through physics-based geometry re-parameterization
Significance of output:
The major bottleneck preventing the ubiquitous and truly efficient use of multi-disciplinary design optimization technologies in everyday engineering design practice is the ‘curse of dimensionality’. Funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, this study tackles this by reducing drastically the dimensionality of parametric geometries. Moreover, some of the physics of the problem is also integrated into the parameterisation itself – this brings further time savings in a design context. By virtue of its computational parsimony, it also enables the introduction of sophisticated geometry schemes and analysis into the earliest phases of the design process.
