English abstract

This chapter investigates 19th Century British women travellers’ contribution to the creation of an image of Italy as a European nation in formation by uncovering Margaret Collier’s representation of the Risorgimento and its values in her writing. It studies the shaping of modern Italy through her fictional and autobiographical writing. When, in 1864, Margaret Collier (1846-1928) was presented to Giuseppe Garibaldi in London, she did not know that she would have participated in the construction of modern Italy personally.
