Additional information

This is the first paper to present a comprehensive mass transfer characterisation of porous mesh impellers in rotating bed reactors, and demonstrated both that a knitted wire mesh gave significantly better mass transfer performance than other designs over a wide range of viscosities, and that the improved mass transfer could be exploited for bioprocess intensification. The research was used in the development of a high gravity bioreactor for the production of biopolymers as part of the EC funded project Bioproduction (Sustainable Microbial and Biocatalytic Production of Advanced Functional Materials; 26515).
