Additional information

The research reported in this paper was the result of an international collaborative study funded by the Daiwa Foundation on the mechanical factors affecting the performance and life of a novel lithium ion battery material, and this was the first paper to clearly show how mechanical failure of electrode coatings can reduce battery life. This is a finding which has been subsequently confirmed for other high lithium-storage electrode systems (e.g. Li et al, J. Electrochem. Soc. 158(6), A689, 2011).
