Additional information

This paper was the first to report on the rapid degradation of the strength of phenolic composite materials in fire, and the first to identify the importance of water content on this rapid degradation. Phenolics had been perceived to be excellent in transport applications, but this research showed that the phenolic composites studied did not provide good structural performance in fire unless the water content was significantly reduced.
