Additional information

The mathematical model developed in this paper tackles a particular aspect of anaerobic digestion processes, the stability of microbial food chains, with reference to wastewater treatment that had previously not been considered due to the complex mathematical challenges. The work was carried out as part of a Marie Curie Excellence Award (MEXT-CT-2006-023469 ECOSERV: designed ecosystem services for biological treatment) and is now being integrated into the general industry standard ADM1 (Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1) as part of an EngD project at Newcastle in collaboration with Perceptive Engineering (contact: David Lovett; d.lovett@perceptiveapc.com).
