Additional information

This paper extends previous work of the group to consider the collapse of aluminium alloy plates and stiffened panels. The paper presents the most in depth study of collapse of these types of structures to date, improving on previous studies by properly considering the influence of the heat affected zone and residual stress due to welding. These parameters are shown to have significant influence on the progressive collapse of thin plated structures. The research was funded by the US Office of Naval Research (Structural Performance of Aluminium Naval Vessels; reference N00014-07-1-0533).
