Streikkultur: Performanzen und Diskurse des Arbeitskampfes im schweizerisch-österreichischen Vergleich (1860-1950)
This monograph is based on a very large body of sources collected in 35 archives and libraries in Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, UK, Russia, the Netherlands and Germany. Its concept is complex due to its comparative design linked to a qualitative and microscopic approach requiring analysis of 22 case-studies, allowing discussion of topics such as discourses about legitimacy of strikes, types of strike-related violence, the role of emotions, the question of gender roles within strike agency, the role and perceptions of ethnicity in strike contexts, strike-related performances and their spatial dimensions, transnational aspects of striking and the commemoration of strikes.
This monograph is based on primary source research conducted in 35 archives and libraries in 7 countries (Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, UK, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany). It compares two countries, Switzerland and Austria, whose extremely low strike activities after 1950 strongly contrast with their previous strike record. Using an innovative methodology and analysing 22 case studies the book discusses topics such as strike discourses, strike-related violence, the role of emotions, the question of gender roles within strike agency, the role and perceptions of ethnicity in strike contexts, strike-related performances, transnational aspects and the commemoration of strikes.
