Additional information

<15> This Web-based toolkit (http://landcover-change.jrc.ec.europa.eu/validation/videos/Birdlife_editor.html) has had excellent takeup because it allows users to collaboratively classify landcover with reference to global satellite imagery and time-series without licensing/installing data or software. The research paper excited interest with its original approach to leveraging huge data stores using Web service protocols and standards, and generated invitations to present at the UK Food and Environment Research Agency and train attendees at a capacity-building workshop in South America (http://www.ert-conservation.co.uk/Conf_Aims2.htm). Users of the tool (http://landcover-change.jrc.ec.europa.eu/validation/Birdlife.php) include RSPB and Birdlife (Graeme.Buchanan@rspb.org.uk]) to monitor African protected areas using local expertise, and FAO (Erik.Lindquist@fao.org]) for tropical forest classifications.
