Additional information

Hardware and middleware techniques are proposed that enable wireless sensor networks of very small (<10kg) satellite systems. The novelty lies in the integration of system-on-a-chip soft-core processors using Java-based mobile phone technology. Research was funded by the EPSRC ESPACENET project (£250k) and follow-up EPSRC funding (£100k). This enabled the first UK CubeSat mission STRAND, developed in collaboration with the UK small satellite manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) launched in spring 2013. As part of the mission a smart phone used the technology to communicate images to ground.
