Additional information

Designers and manufacturers of electrical insulation for high voltage electrical equipment currently rely on parameters such as the electrical breakdown strength to design reliable components. The reported work demonstrates that weak regions give rise to isolated local damage but not necessarily initiate electrical breakdown. This provides a new tool for the interpretation of electric strength measurements allowing designers to develop reliable insulating components of reduced size and cost.
