Additional information

The work was sponsored by Borealis AB, Sweden, a manufacturer of high-grade polyethylene used in the manufacture of high voltage power transmission cables. The industrial need of assessing the condition of HV power cables when in service to avoid electrical breakdown and power outages on the electricity transmission system is addressed. The resulting new techniques that are being applied at Alstom’s new HVDC cable test facility at Stafford, UK, for ageing tests on commercial HVDC power cables from Nexans, France and Viscas, Japan are described.
