Additional information

The definitive mathematical description of classical instability modes within the family of rotating-cone boundary layers is presented. The paper highlights the limits of the classical approach to slender cone flow and predicts distinctions between the instability mechanisms within slender and broad cone flow outside of the classical framework. This work prompted further study into slender rotating cones, including experimental and computational collaborations currently in design with academics in Sweden (Profs Alfredsson & Lingwood, KTH, Stockholm), and led to the award of a £270k EPSRC grant (EP/G061637/1).
